New Bar & Restaurant Opens In Cardiff City Centre

BEATBOX BARS, the independent Cardiff bar & restaurant group behind Buffalo, 10 Feet Tall and Undertone, has announced the opening of its new venture FIRE ISLAND.

This beautiful but previously neglected heritage landmark has been revived to bring a unique bar and restaurant specialising in CRAFT BEER, BARREL AGED COCKTAILS and HOME-SMOKED & GRILLED BBQ style food.

Formerly Glamorgan Council Staff Club, it boasts a grand entrance on Westgate Street opposite the Millennium Stadium, and a 'speakeasy' style entrance on the cobbles of Womanby Street.

Inside, the two-storey building incorporates a Prohibition speakeasy style, while cleverly using the magnificent brick vaults to create an impressive bierkeller atmosphere.

The food menu will include SLOW-SMOKED & GRILLED MEAT, paired with HOMEMADE SLAWS and PICKLES.

Dan Biscombe, a Director at Beatbox Bars, said: “We’re really passionate about providing the most authentic American style smoked BBQ and craft beer in Cardiff.

“We have barrel aged cocktails, created using homemade bitters. We make all our own sauces and rubs, and our meat is cooked low and slow to make sure everything is just right. Customers can try pulled pork, beef brisket and home-smoked ribs from our smoking cabinets”.

Open from 9am daily, Fire Island will also serve breakfasts from AMERICAN PANCAKES to a full traditional ENGLISH BREAKFAST, with fresh coffee, juices and specialty SUKI TEAS.

On tap will be a range of handpicked CRAFT BEER from the UK & beyond, with TINY REBEL BREWERY who have also created a house brew BEATBOX APA. BRISTOL BEER FACTORY, DARK STAR BREWING CO and REDEMPTION BREWING COMPANY will also feature – but to help customers decide, the bar will be introducing BEER FLIGHTS – a selection of three 1/3 pint tasters.

FIRE ISLAND opens its doors to the public on Saturday 24th November, and bookings are now being taken including the Christmas period.

Opening times will be Monday to Sunday 9am – 1.30am.

The Orchestra concludes its autumn season of concerts at BBC Hoddinott Hall with a Festive Afternoon Concert, on Friday 7 December, which includes performances by Welsh soloists Elin Manahan Thomas and Catrin Finch, and a variety of seasonal music – including Samuel Barber’s orchestral work based on Christmas Carols, Die Natali; and Leroy Anderson’s quintessential Christmas Festival.

Cardiff Half Marathon

More than 18,000 people will take part in Wales' biggest road race, the Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday October 14th 2012.

It is an annual half marathon race held in the Welsh capital city of Cardiff. The event was established in 2003 and is noted for the scenery of the route being so incredible and varied, as the course takes runners past historical landmarks such as Cardiff Castle, the modern waterfront of Cardiff Bay and the greenery of Bute Park.

For full Race day information, a spectator’s guide or information on road closures, we recommend the official site - cardiffhalfmarathon.co.uk.

Events not to miss this October

October 8

The Jim Jones Revue

Clwb Ifor Bach

Like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion or Nick Cave’s Grinderman Jim Jones sees the dirty black heart that made rock ‘n’ roll so powerful and he’s out to remind us that the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and even Elvis Presley were once elemental and dangerous figures pedalling the devil’s music.

Described by one critic as ‘a gangfight set to 12-bar blues’ and looking like they’re might well have switch blades under all that black leather, their reputation for fearsomely committed live shows should be in full force on the opening date of their UK tour in support of soon to be released third album, The Savage Heart.

If you have daughters, you should probably lock them up.

Tickets: £11. Over 18s only.

October 11

The Civil Wars

Cardiff University

It’s never been more fashionable to be a tobacco chewing, hollow dweller singing about the Preacher Man who’ll never save your soul.

The Civil Wars have ridden the crest of that backwoods wave with their modern take on adult Americana. They’ve won some big name fans in their speedy ride to the top: Adele choose them as support on her latest US tour and Taylor Swift got a bit of roots credibility by featuring them on her Hunger Games single Safe and Sound.

Looking like Johnny Depp and Joanne Whalley can’t have helped Joy Williams and John Paul White’s career (they’re not a couple contrary to what the auto-complete on Google might want you to believe). But there’s some real song writing craft there too; they met at a songwriters’ camp and latest single Barton Hollow is gutsier, with a real classic feel to it.

If things keep going this way for The Civil Wars they’ll be in a far bigger venue next time they call into Cardiff, so catch ‘em while you can.

October 15

Andy Fairweather Low and the Low Riders

New Theatre

When it comes to ‘local boy made good’ Cardiff can’t do much better than Andy Fairweather Low.

From his 60s pop heartthrob days with Amen Corner to one of the most sought after session men, his voice and guitar have been constants at the top of the music business.

His musicianship has been good enough for Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, David Gilmour, The Who and Kate Bush to call on his services.

Promising to cover his whole career in a nostalgic hometown show this should be an emotional evening.

Tickets: From £20. Box office: 029 2087 8889, www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.

October 15 – 20

Wales Millennium Centre

American idiot

Proving that nothing safe from the musicals juggernaut comes this blockbuster show from America’s political punk pop kings.

Leader Billie Joe Armstrong recently showed his rock and roll credentials with a foul-mouthed onstage tirade at concert organisers before checking into rehab. But this show is unlikely to change Johnny Rotten’s verdict that the Californian outfit are more ‘plunk’ than punk. .

Based on the 2001 Grammy winner, American Idiot tells the story of the Jesus of Surburbia and his two best mates. Itself inspired by rock operas and musicals, there’s no reason why the album shouldn’t successfully transfer to the stage. The critics love it and, far from being embarrassed by it, Billie Joe has even taken to the stage himself on occasion.

With some big anthemic hits - Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday and the title track – belted out by an onstage band, this could be the musical for people who don’t like musicals.

Tickets £16.50 - £39.50. No under fives, suggested for 12 years and above.

October 18 – 21

Ice Age Live!

Motorpoint Arena Cardiff

Stage plays that transfer to the screen are pretty few and far between these days. Most of the traffic is from silver screen to footlights in the era of 360 degree franchises keen to get that pester power going.

Call it cashing in if you want, but there’s no denying the success of the frozen animated adventures that are the latest franchise to transfer from screen to stage.

Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, Scratt the sabre-toothed squirrel and Diego the tiger have been delighting youngsters and their parents through four animated adventures including this summer’s Continental Drift.

This promises to be a big budget spectacular with plenty of familiar faces and some new surprises too.

Tickets: From £20. No unaccompanied under 14s.

October 24

Alice Cooper’s Halloween Night of Fear

Motorpoint Arena Cardiff

It might surprise a young Slipknot fan today, but back in the day Alice Cooper’s theatrical rock ‘n’ roll spiced with cheap horror movie shocks and vaudeville tricks was considered quite shocking.

The appetite for his schlock rock has never diminished (some cracking songs don’t hurt) and his UK Night of Fear Tour is in Cardiff just in time for the warm up to Halloween.

Alongside Alice – in reality a golf loving born again Christian - are Loaded, featuring Guns ‘n’ Roses legend Duff McKagan. You also get Ugly Kid Joe for your ticket money, the boys behind the archetypal Wayne’s World Song, Everything About You.

Tickets: From £41.25. www.livenation.co.uk 029 2023 4

October 30 – November 3

Birmingham Royal Ballet: Autumn Celebration and Swan Lake

Wales Millennium Centre

BRB are one of the ‘Big Three’ of the British ballet world and are back at the WMC with two evenings of dance which show off their full range.

The first two nights are dedicated to three new short pieces. The Grand Tour is a twirl through the 1920s to the timeless tunes of Noel Coward. Faster, Higher, Stronger was commissioned as part of the Cultural Olympiad alongside the London games and showcases the power, speed and skill of these dance athletes. Finally, The Dream is inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream to the music of Mendelssohn.

The company’s residency ends perhaps the most iconic ballet of them all, Swan Lake. To Tchaikovsky's beautiful score, a timeless story of good, evil and all-consuming love plays out.

Dance is booming at the moment, so why not see some of the best.

Tickets: £19 - £32. Box office: 029 2063 6464 wmc.org.uk

The Best of Welsh Design Awards - submissions now open

Submissions are now open for the Best of Welsh Design Awards and the organisers, the Cardiff Design Festival, are delighted to announce that this year’s sponsors are Comisiwn Dylunio Cymru/Design Commission for Wales.

The Awards are open to professionals and new graduates working in every design discipline, from urban and landscape design and architecture, to branding, interactive and graphics, furniture, product and fashion, design thinking and social design.  They celebrate the wealth of talented designers and design-thinkers in the city and across Wales and help ensure that their skills and passion are recognised.

‘The beauty of the Best of Welsh Design Awards 2012 is that it doesn’t have to be about buildings or contract values or big projects’, explained the Chief Executive of Comisiwn Dylunio Cymru/Design Commission for Wales, Carole-Anne Davies.  ‘It can be about your creative thinking, about ideas and approaches that stimulate the imagination, make us think and whet the national appetite for great design. Good design matters to Wales and in the places where we live, learn, heal and have fun - it matters a great deal. ‘

The Awards are open to professionals working in Wales or from Welsh based clients and to graduates from Wales or from Welsh based courses.  Work completed for a paying client should be entered as professional. Entries can also be sent in by delighted clients.

The Awards are part of the Cardiff Design Festival which kicks off on 28 September 2012 and runs for two full weeks of events, exhibitions, talks, challenges, happenings and socials highlighting the wealth of design talent that can be found, not just in the city of Cardiff but across the whole of Wales.

Now in their seventh year the Awards have become a key part of the Festival and this year’s judging panel is the most exciting ever. Consisting of design leaders and past winners the judges include Richard Seymour, from world renowned design agency SeymourPowell, Glenn Tutssel of The Brand Union, Carole-Anne Davies of the Design Commission for Wales and Mike Cleague, BAFTA award winner and owner of the Cardiff based, digital interactive agency, Carbon Studio.

The Festival Director, Olwen Moseley said, “Design permeates every aspect of our lives from the way our breakfast is packaged to the design of the beds we sleep in. The emphasis for the awards is on results - not just what looks great but on what impact has been made.  They are a showcase of the greatest innovations Wales has to offer, so the more entrants we get the better! The Festival itself always has new partners joining in, each bringing new ideas and themes that give the Festival a distinctive and fresh flavour everytime.”

For details on how to enter or for more information about the Festival and events visit www.cardiffdesignfestival.org. The deadline for submissions is midnight on 17 August 2012.

Wales’ biggest reggae festival celebrates Jamaica 50th anniversary - in Barry this weekend

A festival of Jamaican music, food, lifestyle, and children’s activities is taking place this weekend (August 3- 5) in Barry to mark Wales’ biggest event for the Jamaica 50th anniversary of independence celebrations.

The open air festival features top ska, reggae, and rappers reflecting 50 years of cultural exports from the Caribbean island.

The event, supported by the Jamaican High Commission, is attracting the Caribbean community from all over the UK to see-top line acts including Janet Kaye and rapper Junior Macee.

Visitors can enjoy during three days (August 3-5th) a trip through 50 years of music with Friday featuring early reggae and ska, Saturday during the day showcasing lovers rock and reggae sounds from the ‘70’s and 80’s with dancehall music into the evening, culminating on Sunday with a celebration of reggae and rap to the present day.

For the family there are traditional Jamaican food stall, cakes, beauty products, and even a Caribbean psychic reader, along with award-winning children’s activities.

BOGIEZ NEW YEAR'S BLOWOUT 2011!

Bogiez Rock Bar & Nightclub According to those pesky Mayans the world will be ending in 2012.

Clever bunch that they are, they clearly predicted the Bogiez New Years Eve Bash well in advance. It’s as if they could psychically tell that Cardiff’s only dedicated rock bar and nightclub would hold a bash so epic, a party so intense and a night so utterly kick-ass that the world would cease to be just because of it’s sheer existence!

Because let’s face facts: NOBODY brings in a new year like Bogiez, and this year, as the calendar goes one louder we too are going past 11 and all the way to 12!

Because NOT ONLY will Bogiez be hosting the most hard-rocking clubnight the world has ever seen, NOT ONLY will the DJs be spinning the finest mix of Rock, Metal and Alternative anthems that this (soon to be doomed) planet has ever seen and NOT ONLY will the drinks prices remain UTTERLY UNCHANGED from our usual Saturday night of hard-rocking goodness, BUT to make this one even more epic than all those that have come before it: It’s FREE.

As this is the end of a rather epic year for us, the year where we evolved into our own, full time venue, we thought we'd shrug off the door tax early on to allow as many people to come and join us kiss goodbye to '11 (and cause let's face it, the moths take up residence in so many of our wallets at this time of year!). So, we’ve just killed the myth that going out on New Years Eve is “too expensive”.

Oh but we’re not done. As well you know we usually close our doors at 3am on a Saturday night, but that (frankly) just isn’t good enough for a party of these kind of proportions. So, for New Years Eve only, here’s our new closing time:

SIX O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!

Put simply, we’ll keep going as long as you all keep going. If that’s 4am, 5am or even 6am we’ll just keep pumping out the finest rock tunes and serving the finest beverages possible, making sure 2012 starts in the exact apocalyptic way that might even stop the world from ending!

So, since there may not be, shall we rock like there’s no tomorrow?

NOTE: £5 tickets are available if you'd like to have a ticket as opposed to just turning up. These are TOTALLY optional but do guarantee entry. A link to purchasing advance tickets will be online tomorrow (Friday 16th).

Saturday December 31st 2011, See www.bogiez.com for full details. Doors at 9pm until you all collapse, FREE entry until midnight, £5 after. All Saturday drinks deals remain unchanged.

SYSTEM 909 - NYE!!!

Undertone, Church Street, Caerdydd, United Kingdom So as 2011 draws to a close we put on one last party to send it out with a bang.

NYE is a difficult one to judge, do you stay local with a couple of mates?, try and avoid the crowds and the ridiculous drinks prices, or do you go all out?, splash the cash and head to one of the many big expensive events that happen up and down the country?
Inevitably which ever one you chose, you always seam to end up just that little bit disappointed don't you?
Stay local and see the new year in with a damp squip, half cut with little atmosphere, go large and get jostled about in rammed clubs, spend all the money you don't have left after xmas, and spend the rest of the night/day trying to find your way home, thinking the night didn't really live up to all the hype.

Probably the best new years are the ones spent at a house party, filled with all your mates with music you love, no heavy drinks prices, no jostling crowds spilling your beer, and an atmosphere fitting the celebration of the end of one year and the start of a bran new one.

It's exactly what we're going to try and re-create at SYSTEM 909 this year. A night packed full of some of the best dj's that have graced the decks over the last 12 months (and a couple of new ones!), cheap drinks prices, cheap entry, and an atmosphere which SYSTEM 909 is renowned for. Expect a few little surprises on the night as well to help the celebrations go with a bang.

If your looking for good music, a good atmosphere, and that house party feel, then this ones for you,................................................................................................ get sweaty, get dirty, get naked, let's have a fucking party!!!!!!!!
